What is a PEG Tube?
A PEG tube, or Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy, is a medical device used to provide nutrition, fluids, and medication directly to the stomach in individuals who are unable to swallow or eat by mouth. PEG tubes are often required for clients with complex medical conditions, such as neurological impairments, severe illnesses, or trauma that affects the ability to swallow safely. As a case manager, I hope this education series shows how I work closely with clients who have PEG tubes, ensuring that they receive the proper care and support to manage this vital aspect of their health and recovery.

Education: Understanding PEG Tubes and Their Role in Recovery/Case Management
PEG tubes play a crucial role in ensuring that individuals who cannot eat or drink orally still receive the necessary nutrition and hydration for their recovery. However, for many clients and their families, managing a PEG tube can feel overwhelming, particularly when it is introduced for the first time. I work with clients who need PEG tube feeding to ensure that they understand how to manage the device and receive the appropriate support from healthcare professionals.
One of the key aspects of managing a PEG tube is ensuring that clients are receiving the right balance of nutrients. I work alongside dietitians to develop tailored nutrition plans that are both safe and effective for my clients. These plans are adjusted as necessary to reflect changes in the client’s health and nutritional needs, ensuring that they continue to receive the support they need throughout their recovery.
Supporting Families and Caregivers
Family members and caregivers play a vital role in helping clients manage PEG tubes. Often, the responsibility for daily feeding and tube care falls to family members, which can initially feel intimidating. I provide hands-on guidance and support to families, ensuring they have the knowledge and confidence to care for their loved ones safely at home. I also make sure that families are aware of the signs of complications, such as infections or blockages, so that any issues can be addressed quickly.
Regular monitoring and support are also critical in ensuring that clients with PEG tubes remain healthy and that the feeding process is as smooth as possible. As a case manager, I coordinate with healthcare professionals to ensure that PEG tube care is managed properly and that clients continue to receive the support they need to thrive.
